According to press release from the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association Friday morning, an annual financial review was conducted in early 2019, and it discovered inappropriate expenditures by former Executive Director John Bishop. John Bishop, who started his law enforcement career in 1988, retired as Curry County Sheriff in 2014 to become Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association’s executive director, according to the association.
Following the examination of a more detailed record, the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association reported the matter to the Oregon Department of Justice who then conducted a criminal investigation resulting in charges.
On Friday, November 22, in Marion County Circuit Court, Bishop pled guilty to Theft in the First Degree after admitting to stealing from the association for three years ending last April.
Bishop was sentenced to 24 months probation, 180 hours of community service, restitution to the Oregon State Sheriffs’ Association in the amount of thirteen thousand dollars, and revocation of his Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, law enforcement officer certification.
Wow….being a thief doesn’t happen overnight… Curry County should go back through and investigate their financial records during his tenure here.
