Just before 10:00pm Sunday night, October 13th, the Brookings and Harbor Fire & Rescue Departments were dispatched to a structure fire at 17535 Ross Lane off of Carpenterville Rd. in the Brookings Rural Fire District. As units were responding, multiple 911 calls continued to come in reporting a fully involved structure.

The first arriving fire unit arrived on scene at 10:06pm and while in route called for mutual aid from Cape Ferrelo and Winchuck Fire Departments for water tenders as this location is out of the hydrant system.

It was also reported that there was a large amount of ammunition in the residence, and early on as fire units were arriving, the ammunition could be heard going off. No firefighters or civilians were injured during this fire.

Coos Curry Electric also responded due to a line being down. The Curry County Sheriff’s department made a call to Red Cross to help with the displacement of the homeowner. The resident, who was the only one at the structure, was out of the building when fire units arrived on scene and was uninjured. Later during the fire his dog came back to the residence and was reunited with its owner.

The structure was a total loss. The fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature but there is a pending investigation.

Mutual aid was also requested for additional personnel and a mobile cascade system from Crescent Fire District. Later Smith River and Gold Beach were called in to provide more personnel. Altogether there were about 40 firefighters that fought the fire.
