The Brookings-Harbor High School Bruins made their much anticipated Varsity Football debut Saturday, September 2nd, in non-league and rare out of town “home game” against North Valley High School at the Del Norte High School stadium because of smoke related conditions in Brookings.
The Bruins struck first with a spectacular 68 yard run by #1 Bailey Stamm. On the Bruins second play from scrimmage, Quarterback Brig Schofield, #2, handed the ball to Stamm on what was supposed to be a power dive play through the middle of the offensive line, however, North Valley filled the gap forcing Stamm to break the play to the outside and then out ran the field 68 yards for a Bruins touchdown.
After the Bruins touchdown, they would kick the ball off to North Valley for their first possession of the game. North Valley quickly answered when Daniel Cram ran away with a 53 yard run from scrimmage of his own.
In the second quarter, it was again Daniel Cram from North Valley running for another touchdown putting North Valley up 14-7. With four minutes left in the first half, North Valley would score on another touchdown run putting North Valley up 22-7 after a successful 2 point conversion.
Late in the 2nd quarter, as the Bruins pressed to get back into the ball game, Stamm would be stripped of the ball by a tough defense. North Valley would then score again on a 40-yard pass play, followed by another 2 point conversion putting North Valley up 30-7 with 2:44 left in the first half.
The North Valley defense would then put the Bruins in a 4th and 21 situation, and again a Bruin offense trying to make something happen would have another turnover as Schofield would then throw an interception. That would be followed by another North Valley rushing touchdown and 2 point conversion making the score 38-7 with 23 seconds remaining in the first half.
The game would be ended early by officials due to extremely smokey skies and unhealthy air quality conditions.
The Bruins will regroup this week and prepare for another non-league challenge this Friday night at 7:00 PM against the Mustangs at Hidden Valley High School in Grants Pass.
