Inside the Lines with Lady Bruin Volleyball Coach Lorinda Shew

This year is my second year coaching the Lady Bruins varsity team and we have players from every grade level coming together to work hard to meet their goals. The girls first objective was to improve blocking and hitting skills and percentages in order to win some preseason games.

They also realize that teams who serve well, win games. They have an 89% serving percentage, so that’s very close to where we want to be. We are trying to take one point at a time and one set at a time, and giving it everything we have. We are also working on staying steady rather than having a lot of swings up and down in momentum.

Now that these skills are steadily increasing with some wins that came with it, we are working to further refine them and get some league wins, starting TONIGHT, Thursday, September 19th against Cascade Christian at Bruins Arena at 6:00pm. We are very lucky to have Asst. Coach Vanessa Nidiffer who played middle for Willamette in Oregon. Her expertise combined with my own experience playing in Southern California where beach volleyball has a strong influence. Asst. Coach Vanessa Nidiffer brings a lot of knowledge from her college experience especially in the areas of blocking, hitting and preparation and we complement each other well. Overall, we have a good vibe going and are looking to continue to improve.

These are great kids to work with because they put their heads down and grind in practice. It has been a great feeling having the support of our parents, school and community, and I feel like that gives the girls more to play for than just themselves. Keep coming out-it means a lot.
