On Saturday, July 13th, at approximately 2:30 pm, Fire District 3 responded to a water rescue at Hays Falls off of Upper River Road in Gold Hill. Dispatch reported that bystanders in the area had spotted a fully dressed man stranded in a nearby rapid.
Fire District 3’s Swiftwater Rescue Team met Rogue River Fire District at the scene and deployed a #FD3 raft in an effort to rescue the victim. The Rogue River Fire crew then swam the rapid to make initial contact with the victim (with the assistance of a kayaker also near the victim) and got the victim out of the water and placed in a personal flotation device with a helmet.
During the crew’s assessment, it was determined that the patient had sustained significant injury and had been in the water for approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
After crews rescued the victim, Mercy Flights Inc transported the patient by air to a local hospital.
