On Tuesday, June 11th, just after 12:00 pm, the California Highway Patrol Humboldt Area responded to a report of a rollover collision on US-101 at Cranell Rd. An officer in the area was on the scene immediately after the collision occurred and located a Volkswagen Beetle overturned within the southbound lanes of US-101, just south of the Mad Little River Bridge.
The driver, 17-year-old IYA SOL ORTIZ-BECK of Trinidad, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and Ortiz-Beck was ultimately transported to Mad River Community Hospital for treatment of major injuries.
Based on a preliminary investigation of the collision, it appears that Ms. Ortiz-Beck was traveling southbound on US-101, in the #1 lane, at approximately 65 MPH. For unknown reasons she allowed the VW to travel across the median and partially into the northbound #1 lane. Ms. Ortiz-Beck over-corrected as she attempted to steer her vehicle back into the southbound lanes, causing the VW to overturn.
Impairment is not believed to have been a factor in this collision.
The California Highway Patrol Humboldt Area is continuing its investigation into this collision and is asking anyone with additional information to contact the Humboldt Area CHP Office at 707-822-5981.
Although no fatality occurred as a result of this crash, traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens aged 16-19 and 60% of those deaths occurred when the teen was not wearing a seatbelt. Please take a moment to remind your young driver to buckle up when in a motor vehicle.
