Man Saved from Face of Humbug Mountain

On Wednesday June 5, just before 8:00pm, the Curry County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from twenty-five year old James Garvis from Winchester Virginia, who was calling to say he was stuck on the side of a cliff at Humbug Mountain just south of Port Orford. Garvis stated he was about three hundred feet above the beach and he could not go up or go back down.

At about 7:56pm, Curry County Deputies arrived in the area. Sheriff’s Search and Rescue responded to the area and the U.S. Coast Guard was notified and asked to assist. Deputies located Garvis stuck on the side of a steep cliff about two hundred feet above the beach. Garvis told Deputies his legs were cramping and was not able to move up or down from his location.

The Sheriff and a Search and Rescue member determined that Garvis was in a location that they would not be able to rescue him safely and the only way to get Garvis down was a helicopter.

Wednesday, at 8 p.m. PDT, Sector North Bend launched a MH-65D helicopter to the location of a man stranded 200 ft above the ground on a cliff on the north side of Humbug Mountain. The gentleman was out hiking and got into a position where he could not ascend, or descend. The MH-65D crew arrived on scene and lowered the rescue swimmer to his position and recovered him safely. The helicopter landed on HWY 101 and transferred the man to Curry County Sheriff's Office on scene for assistance. Great outcome!
