On Monday afternoon Coach Wallin and his varsity boys baseball team eclipsed a major goal, and they did it in an extraordinary fashion. The 2019 Bruin boys baseball team became the 3A-5 Far West League Champions after going undefeated in league play and accumulating a 22-1 record after stringing together an incredible 15 game winning streak.
On Monday the Bruins traveled to Sutherlin to face off with the 10-3 Sutherlin Bulldogs and faced one of their toughest challenges in league play. The Bulldogs put their Ace on the mound, senior right-hander Cabe Meisner who pitched brilliantly going seven innings, allowing zero runs on two hits and striking out ten Bruin hitters.
Starting on the bump for the Bruins was senior hurler Roman Worthey, who also pitched a gem giving up no runs on five hits over seven innings while striking out nine.
Both teams played excellent defense with each team committing only one error in eight innings of baseball.
But in the eighth inning, both teams had to give up their starting pitchers due to pitch counts and the Bruin offense took advantage. Senior right-hander for the Bulldogs Payton Hope allowed a Bruin catcher Jacub McCollum homerun, as well as 2 walks and 2 hits for 5 runs in the top of the eighth inning.
The Bruins Andrew Burger relieved Worthey in the bottom of the eighth allowing 2 runs off of 2 hits as the Bulldogs just could not recover from the 5 runs scored by the Bruins in the top of the final inning.
The Wild Coast Compass sat down with Coach Wallin and asked him what his thoughts are on his 2019 team. “I’m so proud of the work this team has put in this season and buying into the team baseball concept,” he said.
We asked how hard it is to keep this team humble and focused moving forward. “These boys know there are lots of baseball still to go, and the work isn’t done yet. But these guys are excited and motivated now more than ever,” said Coach Wallin.
These two teams will meet up again TODAY to finish off league play in an afternoon doubleheader at the Bruins home field starting at 3:00 pm.
