Hwy. 101 Opened at Slide Area Saturday Afternoon

After two weeks of high paced heavy road work, the Oregon Department of Transportation’s District Manager Darrin Neavoll opened the slide area of Hwy. 101 at the Hooskanaden slide to single lane traffic at noon Saturday. With flagged waits controlling north and south bound traffic, the opening relieved the stressed Carpenterville detour.

The return trip on 101 from the South going North back to Gold Beach. They’ve done a remarkable job on this temporary road in such a brief amount of time. #travelgoldbeach #Hooskanadenslide

According to District Manager Darrin Neavoll, over the next few weeks ODOT and Tidewater Contractors, Inc. will be trying to widen that stretch out to get two lanes open, but it will be at a slower pace because of the alignment. They also will be working at putting together the longer alignment repair.

We just drove 101 to give you an idea of what to expect. (No worries, I was holding the camera, not the steering wheel). This is heading South. #travelgoldbeach #hooskanadenslide

Curry County Commissioner Court Boice was at the ‘Hooskanaden’ slide earlier today. He wanted to personally thank the Emergency Responders and congratulate the O.D.O.T. and Tidewater Crews. In less than 13 days they delivered 21,000 tons of rock to that infamous 1,100 foot section of the beautiful Curry Coastline.

Then Boice had the privilege of watching the very first vehicles drive through. Both figuratively and literally, it’s the beginning of solid and important foundational blocks placed one at a time.

“There was something obviously sad in seeing the latest and worst ever Oregon 101 slide separating our North and South County areas. In the last 10 years, I challenge anyone to name an Oregon City that has been hit harder than Brookings!” stated Court Boice. “I hope our ‘Great American Highway’ with that horrific gap at least closed for now, will help in a symbolic way to bring unity and resolve to our County”. The Curry Comeback is well underway with better days ahead” Commissioner Boice concluded. “I’ll be spending significant time lobbying for help and action from all at the Local, State and Federal levels”.
