On Wednesday March 6th, the Brookings Police Department contacted the Curry County Sheriff to ask for assistance with the recovery of a female who had been found deceased at the base of a cliff at Chetco Point in Brookings. Lt. Dotson of the Brookings Police Department provided information that the female victim was between seventy and one hundred feet below the cliff near the water’s edge.
The Curry County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team were called to respond to the location. The U.S. Coast Guard was called for assistance with the possibility of using a helicopter. Upon arrival, Search and Rescue devised a rope rescue system and a Search and Rescue member rappelled down to the female victim and secured her in soft stokes. The other Search and Rescue members with the help of Sheriff’s Deputies, Brookings Police and the Brookings Fire Department maned the rope system and raised both the victim and the Search and Rescue member back to the top.
The thirty-one year old female victim, who was a resident of Brookings, had been reported missing to the Brookings Police Department on March 5th, 2019. The circumstances regarding the death of the female victim are unknown at this time and it does not appear that there was any foul play. The Brookings Police Department was able to contact the next of kin and will continue the investigation.
The coordination between agencies on this recovery was exceptional and the Curry County Search and Rescue team did an amazing job getting the female victim back to the top of the cliff where Brookings Police released her to Redwood Memorial. Our hearts and condolences go out to the family for the tragic loss.
