Officials at the National Tsunami Center canceled the warning after a few tense hours after waves failed to materialize in coastal Alaska communities. No serious damage had been reported.
There are several different types of tsunami messages: Warnings, Advisories, Watches, and Information Statements. Know the difference between each of these and what to do if one is issued for your location.
According to a statement by both the Curry County Office of Emergency Services and the Del Norte Office of Emergency Services, the emergency alert system was not used last night for the tsunami watch.
After working with state and local partners to verify there was not a threat. Curry County Office of Emergency Services and the Del Norte Office of Emergency Services chose not to wake the resident’s of the community up in the middle of the night.
Authorities considered that this might cause more alarm because of the hour of the night. Bi-Coastal media and social media personnel were activated and radio got immediately on the air for those residents that were awake and social media and preparedelnorte.com were updated as well. The system is working and was ready to launch from the sheriff department to almost 21,000 residents that have signed up.
