In this installment of the Brookings Les Schwab ‘Star Student Athlete’, featured is 3 sport athlete Alonna Nalls. Alonna participated on the BHHS Lady Bruin Volleyball team, the BHHS 2019 3A-5 Far West League Champion Lady Bruin Basketball team, and had participated in previous BHHS Lady Bruin track team which was unfortunately canceled due to the Coronvirus pandemic.
When talking with Alonna’s coaches, one distinct characteristic emerges in every conversation, her overall athleticism gives Alonna the ability to play effectively wherever the coach needs her. “Alonna was a valuable utility player on the volleyball team and played just about every position, which was extremely valuable throughout our season,” said BHHS head volleyball coach Lorinda Shew.
“I don’t think I’ve ever coached a kid who improved as much in a short amount of time as Alonna Nalls.” BHHS varsity Lady Bruin basketball coach Chris Schofield told the Compass.
On the basketball court, Alonna’s offensive contribution was an unintended addition to her ability to play all over the court defensively. “Defensively she was an absolute difference-maker for us,” said Coach Schofield.
Her athleticism and ball pressure really changed the momentum of games especially late in the season. It was this determined work defensively that led to her being named to the 2019 3A-5 Far West League All-Defensive team.
Alonna will be attending Lane Community College on a track scholarship. As a junior, Alonna Nalls took first place in the Ladies long jump with a leap of 14′-06.50. and also finished 7th in the 200m at the 2019 ‘IceBreaker Track Meet’.
Congratulations Alonna, we are confident that your reputation as a teammate with “a very strong work ethic who practices as hard or harder than she plays” will bring you success in whatever it is you choose to do.
