Coach Schofield’s Lady Bruins picked up right where they left off Friday night after defeating the Lady Bulldogs by running early on the Lady Crusaders and never looking back. The Lady Bruins applied their signature guard press and made it difficult for the Lady Crusaders to get their offense started.
Led by sophomore #1 Lexi Scofield the Bruins ran up a 10 point lead on St. Mary’s after Schofield started the scoring with one of her two 3’s in the period. The Lady Bruins had five players in the scorebook in the first period and put 13 points on the board while their defense held the Lady Crusaders to just 3 points in the quarter.
The Lady Bruins turned it up a notch in the second period as last games outstanding player guard Sidney Alexander #11 threw down two 3 pointers for 6 points in the quarter. Backed up by sophomore guard Lexee Murray’s 3 pointer and sophomore Sierra Fitzhugh #00 who hit a basket and went 1 of 2 from the line, the Lady Bruins put up 28 points going into the half-time break.
However the Lady Crusaders, who put up 20 points of their own in the second period came out in the third period determined to continue to run on the Lady Bruins. But the Lady Bruins defense stepped up to the challenge and managed to outpace St. Mary’s led by remarkable hustle and positioning by junior forward Alonna Nalls #34 who beat the St. Mary’s offense to the spot twice, taking the charge two times and changing the momentum of the game. But again it was the outside threat of Alexander who again drained two 3’s and two free throws to lead all scorers with 17 points in the game.
Leading 52-35 at the beginning of the fourth period, senior center Chloe McCrae #44 put the game away by taking over the paint at both ends of the floor. McCrae went off on the offense end of the floor hitting 4 buckets and going 2 for 2 from the line. The Lady Bruins defense only allowed the Lady Crusaders 22 points in the second half of play and extended their lead to twenty points on their way to the 65-35 Lady Bruin win.
The now 3-0 league play Lady Bruins will be on the road for a 7:30pm face off against the South Umpqua Lady Lancers.
